Theoretical and applied studies on climatology

Research projects:

Analysis of extratropical and polar cyclones of the sub-Antarctic sector for the 2011-2013 period

Description: Research of continued quality, of permanent analysis of the activity in the Antarctic troposphere for the sector Drake Passage/Antarctic Peninsula, for the summers of 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 and winters of 2011 and 2012.

Professor in charge: Ricardo Augusto Felício (flg@usp.br)

Microclimate characterisation of Barra do Ribeira-Iguape/SP Mangroves (Universal Notice 14/2001)

Description: The research aims to perform a physiognomic analysis of the mangrove vegetation, identifying the relationship between the main physical characteristics of the environment, with emphasis on microclimate factors, aiming at understanding the dynamics active throughout the estuarine-lagoonar complex Iguape-Cananeia.

Professor in charge: Emerson Galvani (egalvani@usp.br)

Characterisation of photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) levels in the metropolitan region of São Paulo

Description: In an attempt to generate a database of photosynthetic active radiation in the area of the metropolitan region of São Paulo (MRSP) and establish relations between photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) and the global solar radiation at the surface, this study aims: to evaluate the potential of energy at a wavelength of PAR in one year to São Paulo; to establish the partition of PAR within the spectrum of global solar radiation in daily, monthly, and seasonal range; to determine the atmospheric transmissivity of PAR in relation to the global radiation incident at the top of the atmosphere in different conditions of sky coverage; to correlate PAR with the global solar radiation in instant scale and propose an alternative to estimate this component due to global solar radiation.

Professor in charge: Emerson Galvani (egalvani@usp.br)

Spatial distribution of radiation flow in long waves in the metropolitan region of São Paulo

Description: To study the spatial distribution of radiation flow in long waves in the metropolitan region of São Paulo (MRSP).

Professor in charge: Tarik Rezende de Azevedo

Climate impact on South America for different scenarios of vegetation coverage

Description: To understand how the use of the surface of the Earth by man is conditioned by weather and vegetation coverage conditions.

Professor in charge: Maria Elisa Siqueira Silva (elisasiq@usp.br)

Monitoring of mangroves: guardians of coastal areas

Description: Funding by Fundação Grupo Boticário, Bio&Climate Lagamar notice. Code: BL0006_20121.

Professor in charge: Maria Cunha Lignon, Emerson Galvani (egalvani@usp.br)

Integrated alert system of meteorological events for the south, mid-west, and southeast regions of Brazil

Description: To develop alert systems of meteorological events for some regions of Brazil.

Professor in charge: Maria Elisa Siqueira Silva (elisasiq@usp.br)

Climate change vulnerability in the metropolitan region of São Paulo

Description: The objective is to establish the basis for impact, adaptation, and vulnerability evaluations in Brazil, using climate and vulnerability indices based on environmental, geographical, geophysical, and social information, to identify areas of risk to climatic stress and to map the vulnerability of the population at a national and local scale.

Professor in charge: Magda Adelaide Lombardo (lombardo@rc.unesp.br)

Climatic indices and river flows in Brazil

Description: To verify the association between climatic indices and river flows in several regions of Brazil.

Professor in charge: Maria Elisa Siqueira Silva (elisasiq@usp.br)
