Geographic information: treatment, representation, and analysis

Research projects:

Tactile cartography

Description: To propose an innovative teaching method of Geography for people with special needs, highlighting the role of graphical representation, especially of maps in the process of perception of space and the acquisition of concepts.

Professor in charge: Waldirene Ribeiro do Carmo (walcarmo@usp.br)

Distance education via Internet

Description: The project aims at researching three methods of distance education: traditional text, hypertext, and concept maps, evaluating their efficiency and advantages and disadvantages.

Professor in charge: Jorge Gustavo da Graça Raffo (jggraffo@usp.br)

Eurobroadmap

Description: To produce a vision of Europe seen by foreigners and in a non-Eurocentric point of view.

Professor in charge: Neli Aparecida de Mello Théry (namello@usp.br)

Geography and culture

Description: To contribute for the management and sustainability of Indigenous Lands, developing a methodological approach based on Geography and centred on the traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples.

Professor in charge: Regina Araújo de Almeida (reginaaa@usp.br)

Geoprocessing applied to watershed management

Description: The project aims to develop models to assist in the management of watersheds. To this end, it relies on the application of geoprocessing and remote sensing techniques for creating integrated maps. Models such as the one of land use capacity, universal equation of soil losses, and environmental fragility are studied and implemented into geographic information systems aiming at the elaboration of syntheses.

Professor in charge: Ailton Luchiari (aluchiar@usp.br)

Death and place: dasymetric atlas of the municipality of São Paulo

Description: To create an atlas from a dasymetric cartographic basis of the municipality of São Paulo, containing representation of mortality and socioeconomic data.

Professor in charge: Ligia Vizeu Barrozo (lija@usp.br)

Public policies and regional and local impacts of climate changes on fragile areas

Description: The project aims at discussing a problem that arose from the interrelation between three factors: regionalised climate changes, their reflex on vulnerable ecosystems, and public policies elaborated to conform to the impacts of these anthropisation processes.

Professor in charge: Neli Aparecida de Mello Théry (namello@usp.br)

Life quality at the metropolitan region of São Paulo

Description: Remote sensing techniques and those of geographic information systems currently constitute indispensable tools to planners, geographers, environmentalists, and researches of several sciences. This technique enables the obtainment of information about a particular area as well as about the phenomena and the features that occur in such area. On the other hand, techniques from geographic information systems enables the analysis of these data as well as of data from other sources collected by official agencies of surveys. Taking this into consideration, the development of this research intends to outline basic methodological principles for obtaining indicators in images of high spatial resolution, as well as associate them with some variables of census data, especially those related to the Human Development Index (HDI). To reach such aims, initially, a mapping of land use will be elaborated, aiming at detailing residential use in Homogeneous Residential Zones (HRZ), and later these areas are associated with variables of the Census Sectors.
